NIGERIA IS IN A VERY TENSE SITUATION NOW

Please Don’t Tear the Polythene Bag

Hello, I am Dr. Charles Apoki. Today, I want to discuss a concept I call the Polythene Bag Theory, which reflects the current state of Nigeria. Every society is akin to a polythene shopping bag, with its components representing the goods inside. Similarly, it can be likened to a balloon, which can only endure a certain amount of pressure before it bursts. This analogy helps us understand the dynamics of societal tension and the eventual breaking point when citizens demand change.

Throughout history, it’s often a small elite group that controls the nation’s affairs, a concept known as the Iron Law of Oligarchy. When France supported America during its War of Independence and later gifted the Statue of Liberty, it faced economic hardship due to a failed grain harvest and the expenses of war. The ruling class, including abbots and bishops, demanded more tithes from the already pressured populace. This rising tension led to the French Revolution, which drastically reduced the church’s influence and altered the nation’s religious landscape. Similar circumstances could be brewing in Nigeria.

When the poor are pushed to their limits, they revolt. Recently, a Catholic priest spoke out about the minimum wage, reflecting the sentiments of many Nigerians. Contrastingly, charismatic bishops seek relevance and employment from government officials, neglecting the critical issues at hand. This disconnect between religious leaders and the suffering populace exacerbates the societal tension.

Historical parallels can be drawn from the dissolution of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia. Nations like Russia, Ukraine, and others were once unified but eventually split due to unsustainable pressures. Similarly, Nigeria faces increasing strain as citizens protest against hunger and government inaction. Arresting peaceful protestors only adds fuel to the fire, escalating the tension.

The Nigerian government and security agencies must understand that they cannot suppress the anger of over 200 million people. It’s crucial to allow citizens to express their grievances, protest peacefully, and engage in constructive dialogue. Suppressing these voices will only lead to greater unrest and potential implosion.

The government’s role should be to manage the country’s affairs with wisdom and care. Power, especially when obtained through questionable means, can be dangerously intoxicating. Current leaders must recognize the potential consequences of their actions and tread carefully.

In conclusion, Nigeria is at a critical juncture. The Polythene Bag Theory serves as a reminder that ignoring societal pressures and suppressing dissent can lead to catastrophic outcomes. It is imperative for the government to listen to its people, address their needs, and avoid unnecessary conflicts. Only through careful and compassionate governance can Nigeria navigate through these turbulent times.

Stay vigilant, stay informed, and let us all work towards a better Nigeria.
